use frequent flier miles to upgrade from coach to business class

For those interested in upgrading on airlines flights, there are three ways to get out of coach: qualify for a free upgrade, use frequent flier miles to upgrade to business class service, or purchase an upgrade -- usually by buying airlines upgrade coupons.
US Airways flight upgrade awards allow you to upgrade your purchased fare to a confirmed First Class seat for either one-way or roundtrip travel by redeeming award miles. Upgrades are subject to capacity control, and are only available for travel on US Airways.
As for free upgrades, most us airlines offer them to either elite-level frequent fliers or passengers traveling on full-fare economy tickets (sometimes you have to meet both criteria). These upgrades are generally based on availability and are usually confirmed shortly before travel.
delta airlines gives free upgrades to passengers traveling on full-fare coach tickets to domestic and some international destinations, while United and american airlines reward some elite customers with free e-upgrade or paper certificates based on mileage flown.

For those who aren't elite fliers or don't pay top dollar for a ticket, they can use frequent flier miles to upgrade from coach to business class seats. But here's the catch: even if you are using miles to upgrade, US Airways will only let you do so if you are traveling on an eligible, usually higher, fare.

''I see a lot of people who are on a $99 fare and then they're upset to find out they can't upgrade,'' Mr. Bennett said, which is why he recommends asking if you can use miles to upgrade a particular fare before you buy your ticket. For international travel, he also suggests making sure you are allowed to use miles to upgrade if you are purchasing a ticket that includes travel on an airline's code share partner.

How many miles you need for an upgrade depends on the price of your ticket and the airline you are flying. On US Airways, for example, you need 10,000 miles to upgrade a round-trip domestic ticket if you have bought a full-fare coach or nonrestricted ticket, but 20,000 miles for most economy fares. But United requires 16,000 miles to upgrade a round-trip, full-fare domestic ticket and 30,000 miles for most economy fares. With some airlines, certain discount coach fares cannot be upgraded using miles at all.

The carriers will usually confirm an upgrade using frequent flier miles when you buy your ticket, but upgrades are based on availability and in some cases, an airline won't release seats for an upgrade until shortly before a flight.
Although details of the programs vary, the e-upgrade coupons typically come in 500-mile segments, so you might have to use four coupons for a 1,700-mile flight. If you buy coupons, they generally cost $50 each, meaning a round-trip cross-country upgrade (about 6,000 miles) would cost 12 coupons or $600. Sometimes, discounts are available to elite fliers, customers who buy the coupons online or buy in bulk.

Some carriers also offer customers the option to trade miles for e-upgrades, but for now, you can usually get more value for your miles -- and earlier confirmation of your upgrade -- through the airlines' regular frequent flier programs. But this might not always be a deal. For instance, United requires 50,000 miles for eight e-upgrades -- not enough coupons to upgrade a round-trip ticket from Los Angeles to New York -- while you could upgrade that ticket using 30,000 frequent flier miles.

But before you trade miles or cash for any of these programs, read the fine print. E-upgrades cannot be used on some international routes or with all fares, and in some cases the e-upgrades expire after a year. Indeed, with the cuts some airlines have made recently to business- and first-class fares, those who follow the industry say passengers considering an upgrade should first research what it would cost to simply buy a business- or first-class ticket.

''It's a little-known trend that discounted business-class fares are becoming very inexpensive,'' said Matthew J. Bennett, publisher of Firstclassflyer.com, which offers free advice and a newsletter with tips on ways to fly up front.

Gatwick to Shannon Airport flights Aer Lingus

Aer Lingus start a daily route Shannon Airport to London Gatwick airport from March 27th
The service will originate in Gatwick with a 6.50 a.m. departure and will be the earliest daily London service to Shannon, arriving at 8.15 am. The return-leg from Shannon departs at 9 a.m., arriving in Gatwick at 10.25. Bookings for the flight can be made from today on the Aer Lingus website www.aerlingus.com.
The new route will commence on March 27, with flight EI917 departing Gatwick at 0650 and arriving in Shannon at 0815. The return leg EI916 will leave Shannon at 0900, landing back in London at 1025.

The new service means Aer Lingus will offer a total of four daily flights between London and Shannon, with three existing services departing Heathrow at 0950, 1450 and 1925. Ryanair currently serves Shannon from both Gatwick (a six-times weekly lunchtime service) and Stansted (a morning weekday flight and a daily evening service).
The new Gatwick service is an excellent start to the New Year for Shannon and is something we have been working with Aer Lingus on during recent months. For Aer Lingus to add Gatwick, not least with its early arrival time at Shannon, to its growing network of services is a real boost for us and, indeed, the greater West of Ireland region. Gatwick is Britain’s second largest airport, serving more than 200 destinations in 90 countries across short and long-haul point-to-point services so this is very significant from a connectivity point of view.

“In addition, we were delighted to see Ryanair last month announce the establishment of a new Fuerteventura service from February as well as reinstate Nantes, Malaga and Palma-Mallorca services. On top of all this, we also have the new incentive scheme launched by the DAA in December for all three state airports, which will see passenger charges waived once an overall threshold for the airports of 23.5 million passengers is reached. We believe that this will be a key incentive for airlines to expand their services and this can only be good for Shannon and, indeed, for the region if targets are reached.”

Summer Schedule New York to London Heathrow

Summer 2011 will bring even more benefits to customers as a result of the enhanced relationship among American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia when, for the first time ever, the airlines' schedules are coordinated for transatlantic flights - including American's London express service with 15 flights per day from the New York city area to London. New Summer Schedule Means Hourly Service in the Afternoon from New York Kennedy to London Heathrow

The new schedule alignment, which begins March 27, means customers traveling between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and London Heathrow Airport (LHR) will benefit from more conveniently timed flights during peak periods in the late afternoon and evening. Customers will now have more ways to London - 15 flights a day in total between New York City (JFK/EWR) and London (LHR/LCY) - than ever before.

Previously, the 11 daily flights from JFK-LHR included five flights operated by American and British Airways that left at almost the same time. Now, those flights have been spread out to provide more departures at more desirable times throughout the day. For example, instead of the two morning flights from JFK in which both departed at 8:30 a.m., one will now depart at 8 a.m. and the other at 9:30 a.m., with both still arriving in London on the same day.

In addition to the schedule changes offering more ways to London, there are many other schedule improvements resulting from the joint business cooperation.

From Chicago to London, American and British Airways will now have close to hourly departures from 5 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. local time. Previously there was a three-hour gap in service.

Out of Miami, American and British Airways will now offer three different departure options between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before, only two departure times were available for customers.

In Boston, the new flight schedule allows passengers to leave at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. local time, still arriving the same day into London. The last flight of the day has been pushed back by more than an hour making it more convenient for customers to get in a full day's business before leaving for London.

On the other side of the Atlantic, schedules also have been aligned for customers flying to all of these U.S. destinations from London.

American Eagle add service JAX MIA

American Eagle Airlines has increased nonstop service between Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) and Miami International Airport (MIA), with the addition of two new flights effective April 5, 2011. American Eagle Airlines is the regional affiliate of American Airlines.

The additional flights will bring American Eagle’s daily departures from JAX to Miami to seven. American Eagle will operate its seven daily flights with a mix of 50-seat Embraer EMB-145 jets and 64-seat Super ATR aircraft.

“This is great news for our region’s business and leisure air travelers,” said Michael Stewart, JAA’s Director of External Affairs. “Locally, there is a huge demand for service to Miami since it is a prime location for business and tourism. We’re thrilled American Eagle has added these flights to our schedule, which gives our customers even more travel choices to an international hub.”

JAA announced last month Delta Airlines will begin daily nonstop service between JAX and MIA beginning in March, 2011. Delta plans to operate four departures and arrivals each day between the two Florida cities.

With this latest addition, there will be 11 daily departures from Jacksonville to Miami.

direct flights Puerto Rico to Jacksonville airport

JetBlue Airways will begin daily nonstop service between Jacksonville and San Juan, Puerto Rico, beginning in May 2011. The airline plans to operate one departure and arrival each day between Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan.

The JetBlue flights will be the first daily direct flights between JAX and the island of Puerto Rico.
The addition of service between Jacksonville and San Juan underscores JetBlue’s commitment to Puerto Rico. JetBlue sees Puerto Rico as the cornerstone of growth in the Caribbean, and they are happy to be able to offer expanding flights at an affordable price to their customers.
JetBlue also announced that it will add a second daily flight from Jacksonville to Boston in May 2011. “This is great news for Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, especially those at the Jacksonville port, that conduct regular business with Puerto Rico,” said JAA Executive Director and CEO Steve Grossman. “We have been working to put together daily service to Puerto Rico for several years and this announcement is the culmination of a lot of hard work by the JAA staff and the Jacksonville community.”

JetBlue’s planned schedule between Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) and San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) calls for its daily flight to depart JAX at 10:30 a.m. and arrive at SJU at 1:26 p.m. In the other direction, the flight is timed to leave SJU at 2:10 p.m. and to land at JAX at 5:36 p.m.

“I am extremely pleased that JetBlue will now provide nonstop service from Jacksonville to San Juan,” said Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton. “Commerce with San Juan already provides an economic impact of more than $1 billion annually to Jacksonville. Both Cities will greatly benefit from the increased tourism and business travel this improved route will encourage. I look forward to welcoming visitors from our ‘Sister City’, who will now have a greater opportunity to spend time in our community.”

cheapest midnight flight air tickets

There are some secret tips that can help you get cheap airfares if you follow them. Here they some tips

The best way to get cheapest air ticket is to fly in the off-peak season or at hours of the day when most other people don't fly. This might mean catching a midnight plane, but it WILL save you money on your next flight.

Everyone wants to get home at reasonable times and so the later flights, midnight or later, are usually very cheap. Even flights around 2AM will be cheaper. We're talking almost half the price of normal morning flights, or flights in the early afternoon.

If flying at midnight isn't your thing or you don't want to travel or just can't travel during off peak season, then try calling and booking your ticket at midnight. Some airlines offer cheap rates during certain time windows such as after midnight.
Don't give you specific dates when you call airline companies about flights. You want to say that your schedule is flexible and that you were just looking for the lowest rates for your destination.

Don't forget to shop around. Not all websites are created equal and you can find a lot of variety online for the same flight. Make sure you look at all the travel websites, Visit sites like Expedia, Travelocity, and Kayak to see what kind of packages they are advertising. including the airlines, before you make a purchase. Don't just go with your favorite. The key is to do the right research. With low aviation fuel prices and low demand due to global melt down, airfare is bound to get cheaper and if you search hard, you will be sure to find many good deals.

flights from IAD dulles to new delhi air india

Air India launched a daily Washington-New York-Delhi-Kolkata flight from Dec 1 putting the US capital on its map.
The daily flight would have stops in New York and New Delhi before flying on to Kolkata, saving several hours for passengers travelling from Washington.

Air India use state of the art Boeing 777 200LR aircraft on this route. The flight from India will arrive at 9.30 a.m. and depart from Washington Dulles International Airport at 12.10 p.m. between Dec 1 and Dec 14.

The timings change from Dec 15 when flights would arrive at 8.10 a.m. and depart at 1.10 p.m.

The decision by Air India has been welcomed by the members of the fast growing Indian-American community in Washington and adjoining areas, who have been demanding such a flight for several years.

“There was a demand for this flight from Washington DC and we are happy that our efforts have had a positive impact,” said Devashish Ray, executive director of USAsian, a body of Asian communities.

“Air India wishes to thank USAsian for their sustained campaign in bringing this long-awaited need for flights from Dulles to India to a fruitful conclusion,” Chief of Air India in Washington DC Shrikant Ghole said.

Air India would offer check-in facilities at all major points in India from Washington DC and meals of choice keeping in mind religious and other personal preferences such as pure vegetarian, Jain meals, halal and diabetic meals.

Airasia D7 timetable to Japan Haneda

On 9 December 2010, Air Asia X started flying from Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo’s central Haneda Airport with fares as low as £55 one way. With Air Asia already offering flights from London Stansted to Kuala Lumpur, this new route makes it easy to combine Japan with South-east Asia using low-cost flights.

it was announced that Haneda airport, just 14 kilometers south of Tokyo, would be open for international carriers from October 2010, putting it in direct competition with the main hub, Narita, a grueling 57.5 kilometers east. ANA has been operating some international routes through Haneda.

That will connect Tokyo to 132 other Air Asia routes serving not only within the region, but to Australia and the United Kingdom.

The only budget airline serving Japan of note until now has been Qantas Airways' Jetstar which flies between Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
ANA meanwhile have announced plans to unveil a low-cost airline for international and domestic routes from Kansai airport near Osaka in late 2011.
Air Asia X CEO Azran Osman-Rani said at a Tokyo press conference they may compete there too.

"As far as other airports in Japan, we remain very interested. We could operate at at least three different airports over a couple of years," he said.

airasia plan to budapest and Milan

air asia CEO spoke before a news conference marking Monday's opening of services between KL and Paris.

The carrier plans to add three or four European destinations, starting with Berlin or Cologne in the second half of this year, with Milan, Nice, Prague and Budapest under consideration for later, Fernandes said. it will connect conveniently from australia to europe, air asia currently fly to Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth.AirAsia is in talks to buy more Airbus A330 aircraft to operate those routes, briefly heard about an idea AAX might go as far as NY. While this is a good idea, would that also be an opportunity to add on one Euro location as the plane must stop on the way? Extension of STN flight might not be that attractive as the planes are often full anyway. I would recommend one of the places in Eastern / Central Europe such as Krakow in Poland where there are many people around with families on US East Coast and would be happy to have a choice over a local carrier, which is pretty lousy these days. No idea if AAX would be allowed to sell tickets on such proposed KRK-NYC route, probably needs to incorporate a subsidiary in EU. Other interesting stopover points would be Prague in Czech Rep and Budapest in Hungary as well as Berlin. You can even try a 4 times a week service to NYC, stopping twice in, say, Prague and twice in Krakow.

Ryanair Aer Lingus refund legal action

The National Consumer Agency said it was considering taking a High Court challenge against airlines which persist in obstructing travellers in getting refunded money to which they are entitled. Airlines including Ryanair and Aer Lingus have been accused of imposing high administration charges to deter passengers who cancel their flights from reclaiming airport taxes and other charges. AIRLINES which fail to repay Government taxes and airport charges to passengers who buy tickets but do not travel may soon face a legal challenge to force them to offer such refunds.

A survey by a British consumer watchdog in 2007 expressed concern that administration fees charged by many airlines bore no relation to the actual cost of processing claims for such refunds.

It has been estimated that Ryanair may earn almost €40 million each year by retaining taxes and airport charges levied on about two million passengers who fail to take flights for which they have bought tickets.
A Norwegian consumer visited the Ryanair web site and decided to book a flight to the UK. The consumer supplied his personal details and credit card number. However, after he pressed the ‘book’ button an error message appeared on the screen. The consumer assumed that the transaction had not been successful. He then telephoned Ryanair and booked a flight over the telephone. The consumer received a credit card statement some time later and it showed two debits from Ryanair on his account. He wrote to Ryanair seeking an explanation but the response he received was unsatisfactory and he contacted the Norwegian Clearing House for further assistance.

A consumer travelled from France to Ireland with Air France and her luggage was delayed by 7 days. Furthermore, when it arrived it was damaged. Air France refused to pay compensation to the consumer and the consumer contacted ECC Dublin for further assistance.
The ECC Dublin wrote to Air France seeking compensation under the terms of the Warsaw
Convention and Air France promptly compensated the consumer.

qatar airlines rebooking for flight disruption

Qatar Airways’ customers affected by the flight disruption can change their bookings without charge. All applicable re-issue and rebooking fees will be waived till the 31st of May.

If one of your flights has been cancelled, you have the following options:-

Re-book onto a Qatar Airways flight to and from another European sector with a travel date until the 31st of May 2010. In such cases, passengers should hold the necessary documents and valid visas to the new destination.
For refunds, passengers have the following two options. They can either exchange their tickets for a voucher of the equivalent value for use on future flights operated by Qatar Airways. If passengers request cash or credit card refunds, standard refund fees, or an administrative fee, whichever is lower, will apply. You are requested to contact your local Qatar Airways office or your travel agent to process refunds.

An oasis of calm and relaxation awaits Lufthansa First Class passengers and members of the HON Circle at the new First Class Lounge in Concourse B at Frankfurt Airport following the opening of an exclusive First Class Spa on the premises. The spa’s extensive bathing area is equipped with six superior-quality shower rooms (two of them with jacuzzis), and – for the first time at a Lufthansa Lounge – two massage rooms. Here, guests can freshen up, unwind, recharge their batteries and also choose from a range of cosmetic treatments and massages.

"Frequent flyers and business travellers are constantly on the go, and so time becomes a precious asset. Far removed from the hustle and bustle of the airport, we offer guests at the new First Class Lounge an opportunity to use the time in hand to relax in an exclusive atmosphere or to work," says Lufthansa Hub Manager Dr. Karl-Rudolph Rupprecht.

The new lounge in Concourse B, which has a total floor space of 1,220 square metres, can seat more than 100 guests. It also provides all the amenities that form an integral part of the upscale service at Lufthansa’s First Class lounges. A spacious comfort area with relaxing armchairs with a view of the airport apron invites guests to sit back and unwind. Two quiet rooms are available for anyone who would like to withdraw and have a snooze. Enclosed office units equipped with telephones, PCs with Internet access and writing utensils provide an opportunity for guests to work until shortly before their departure. Free WLAN access is also available. Culinary delights are on offer in the restaurant and bistro area, with its excellent choice of menus and drinks. A varying buffet is provided, and meals can also be ordered à la carte. Dishes are freshly prepared in view of the guests. In the bar area, an extensive range of spirits and drinks is offered in an open, relaxed atmosphere. Guests can contact the central Service Desk with any general enquiries, such as rebooking a flight or changing their seat.

A new addition to Lufthansa’s Lounge product is the limousine service for passengers whose flight is departing from Terminal areas A and C – or, in the case of flights to a non-Schengen or non-EU destination, from an apron position. This service was previously only available at the First Class Terminal. Passengers arriving at or transferring from an apron position will also be taken by limousine from their aircraft to the Bus Arrivals point in Terminal B, where they will be met by a Lufthansa staff member and directed to the new lounge.

Lufthansa 747 first class seat upgrade

Whether on the ground or in-flight, passengers selecting a First Class travel experience will always find exceptional service from Lufthansa. In 2010, the airline set new standards in premium travel when it unveiled a new First Class cabin on its A380 flagship. Continuing the trend, from April to November, Lufthansa will completely upgrade ten Boeing 747-400s, resulting in a quieter and more exclusive atmosphere in First Class, which includes just eight seats.

Lufthansa is entering new territory with its seating concept for the Boeing 747-400. Each of the eight individual seats will have an adjacent full-length, permanent lie-flat bed, which measures about 8 feet in length and features a top-quality mattress, guaranteeing first-class sleeping comfort. Each passenger in the new First Class cabin will thus not only have a seat but also a separate bed. Sound-absorbing curtains and sound-deadening insulation beneath the carpet will ensure that passengers enjoy the necessary peace and quiet. The individual inflight entertainment program on the new, 17-inch monitors will also provide soothing relaxation. As a hallmark of Lufthansa’s First Class service, top-of-the-range materials such as matt-brushed metal and scarred leather have been used throughout the cabin. Besides the interior design and fittings, the First Class standard includes comfort items such as temperature-regulating blankets and pillows and the amenity kit from Porsche Design containing cosmetic articles from La mer.

Two large, luxurious bathrooms with separate changing and lavatory areas offer enhanced personal space and storage. The cabin’s eight generously proportioned, ergonomic seats measure 6’9” feet in length and 2’7” feet in width and provide the ultimate in comfort and innovation for an exceptional travel experience. “San Francisco has been a US stronghold for Lufthansa for more than 50 years,” said Jens Bischof, Vice President, The Americas for Lufthansa. “I applaud the airport’s management for their dedication in becoming A380-ready. It demonstrates our shared commitment to serving the global travel needs of the area’s active business community while embracing the environmental advancements of the A380. Very soon, Europe’s most highly regarded airline will serve SFO with the industry’s most advanced aircraft to date.”
